Accounts settled, the City of Adelaide heads home
The Australian Government has paid the rest of the account in order to bring the hull of the historic vessel City of Adelaide back to its home shores.
The federal Government has put up $850,000 to cover unpaid invoiced costs from the previous government, to transport the clipper ship's hull from its current home in the UK back to Adelaide.
The money was found in the unallocated funds for the $4.42 million Protecting National Historic Sites programme.
The Australian Government's offer of funding is not intended to be ongoing. It has sought Clipper Ship ‘City of Adelaide’ Ltd's acceptance that the Government will not provide any further funding to either the guardian company or the historic vessel itself. All parties have agreed that further funding will not be sought.
“Many South Australians have worked for a long period of time towards bringing the City of Adelaide from Scotland to a new home here and we wish them every success in preserving this historic vessel for South Australians and others into the future,” said South Australian Senator Simon Birmingham
“The City of Adelaide is part of our history and is of significance particularly to the many South Australians whose heritage includes family members first reaching our shores on it.”
