Small town push for big truck rest stop
A New South Wales town is pushing the NSW Government to commit to building a regional transport hub at a site already given the Federal Government’s tick of approval.
The Manning Valley Chamber of Commerce in Cundletown says it is in a dire need of a heavy vehicle transport hub to boost the local economy and manage the town’s freight tasks.
Chamber of Commerce President Geoff Jackson believes the State Government is stalling on the $38.5 million project, after the Federal Government set aside $10 million for a new four-lane road bypassing Cundletown, including a new bridge across the Dawson River.
“It’s important for the region that it can be a place where heavy vehicles can come off the road,” Jackson said, “it is also important for fatigue management. There is nowhere at the moment where drivers can actually change over.”
“The Federal Government has the funds available to do it because they’ve already set aside the funds and all we’re looking for is a commitment so that the other parties can get the project under way,” he added.
