Terror brings tightening at nitrate site
Australia’s elevated terrorist alert level has prompted explosives factories to review their security and safety procedures.
The Orica Yarwun ammonium nitrate plant near Gladstone may be the first to overhaul its security measure.
The plant manufactures explosives used in the mining industry nationwide.
An Orica spokesperson has told reporters that security measures at Yarwun were being reviewed due to the raising of the national terrorism threat alert from medium to high.
“Orica will work closely with all relevant authorities to ensure safety and security of the Orica supply chain,” they said.
“Orica places the highest priority on ensuring safety and security.
“Security arrangements have been reviewed to ensure they are consistent with the elevated threat level.”
The company says it will communicate with personnel more often and reinforce the importance of proper, auditable record keeping for explosive products and employee security clearances.
Explosives such as Ammonium Nitrate can only be provided to buyers with valid relevant licences and appropriate security clearances.
Ammonium nitrate from the Orica Yarwun plant was involved in an explosion near Charleville last month, which injured eight people and destroyed a bridge and section of highway.
